FOREWORD 

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards after the draft fmalized by the Spinning 
Preparatory, Spinning and Doubling (Twisting) Machinery Sectional Committee had been approved by the 
Textile Division Council. 

Preparation of Indian Standard on the subject was taken at the request of Khadi and Village Industries 
Commission, Mumbai which is a nodal agency for khadi production. It will lensure better performance of 
CHARKHA as the requirements have been decided taking into consideration the needs of hand spinning. 

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, 
observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2 : I960 *Rules 
for rounding off numerical values {revised)' . The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value 
should be the same that of the specified value in this standard.

SPECIFICATION 



1 SCOPE 

This standard prescribes requirements for spinning 
rings used in CHARKHA. 

2 REFERENCE 

The following Indian Standard contains provision 
which through reference in this text, constitutes 
provision of this standard. At the time of publication, 
the edition indicated was valid. All standards are 
subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on 
this standard are encouraged to investigate the 
possibility of applying the most recent edition of the 
standard indicated below :

3 MANUFACTURE 

3.1 Material 

The rings shall be made of suitable steel according to 
the method employed for production and the 
hardening process utilised. The rings shall be 
blackiodized. 

3.2 Workmanship and Finish 

There shall be no visible damages on the surface of 
rings and it shall be free from any burrs, scars, cracks 
and traces of rust. 

4 REQUIREMENTS 

4.1 The dimensions shall be as given in Fig. 1 and 
shall be subject to the following tolerances :

720-750 HV [seelS 1501 (Part 1)],

5.1 The box containing rings shall be marked with the 
following information: 

a) Name of material, 

b) Indication of the source of manufacture, 

c) Batch or Code number, and 

d) Number of rings in the box. 

5.2 The rings may also be marked with the Standard 
Mark. 

5.2.1 The use of the Standard Mark is governed by the 
provisions of Bureau of Indian Standards Acts, 1986 
and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. The 
details of conditions under which the licence for the 
use of Standard Mark may be granted to manufacturers 
or producers may be obtained from the Bureau of 
Indian Standards. 

6 PACKING 

The rings shall be coated with rust-preventive agent 
and shall be packed as agreed to between the buyer and 
the seller. 

7 SAMPLING 

7.1 Lot 

All the rings of same type and set of dimensions and 
manufactured from the same material under 
essentially similar conditions delivered to a buyer 
against one despatch note shall constitute a lot.
